Here at Matomo we are aware that using advertising networks like Google Ads, Microsoft Advertising or Yandex Ads is unavoidable for many businesses and organisations. Getting insights into the success of your ads usually requires that you embed third party advertising networks into your website and send them the information whenever a conversion happen. The problem is that including conversion pixels from these networks often require consent from users, or they might not meet the required privacy laws or security standards.

If you spend money on ads, you need to know how successful each of your paid ads really are and whether you make a return on your investment.

When you have this feature, then you get back the insights of which online ads are successful without needing to embed anything from a third party network. This feature helps you to easily set up an automated conversion import into various advertising networks.

How it works

When a visitor comes to your website, being referred by one of the supported advertising networks, the target url will be enriched by a unique click id of the Advertising Network. For Google Ads this would be for example a parameter named gclid. With this feature Matomo will automatically track those IDs along with the visitors' data.

To let the advertising network know which of the referred visitors converted you can choose between multiple techniques:

  • The most common might be to include a conversion pixel of the advertising network. As this has privacy, security and website page load implications it may be needed to go with another option.
  • With this feature you have another option to automatically export conversions that were tracked in Matomo and import them in the ad networks you are using. This works for visitors that had a click id directly (clickid was tracked in the same visit) or indirectly (click id was tracked in a previous visit). To make this work all you need to do is to create an export in Matomo which will give you a unique URL which you can then define in your ad network. That's it.
